RSI partnered with Dr. Jānis Bērziņš, Dr. Oscar Jonsson, Dr. Bettina Renz, and Dr. Kristin Ven Bruusgaard to explore the "Russian Way of War." Each scholar has recently written a thought-provoking book or essay on how the Russian military is adapting to change and engaging competition globally. This event featured an important and dynamic conversation.

Panelist: Oscar Jonsson

Oscar Jonsson

Title: Academic Director Affiliation: Center for the Governance of Change, IE University, Spain

Dr. Oscar Jonsson is Academic Director for the Center for the Governance of Change. His research focuses on the impact of emerging technologies on modern statecraft and conflict, particularly Russian modern warfare. He is the author of The Russian Understanding of War (Georgetown University Press), which was a finalist for the Association of American Publisher’s award for scholarly and professional excellence in social sciences (2020).

Bettina Renz

Title: Professor of International Security Affiliation: University of Nottingham

Dr. Bettina Renz specializes in Russian security and defense policy in the post-Cold War era. She is the author of Russia's Military Revival (2018) and has published widely on military reforms, strategic thinking, and civil-military relations. She has lectured internationally and collaborated with military practitioners.

Kristin Ven Bruusgaard

Title: Assistant Professor of Political Science Affiliation: University of Oslo

Dr. Kristin Ven Bruusgaard focuses on nuclear and conventional military strategy, nuclear deterrence, and crisis dynamics, with an emphasis on Russian strategy and European security. She is a certified language officer in the Norwegian Army and has published extensively in journals such as Security Dialogue and Journal of Strategic Studies.

Dr. Jānis Bērziņš specializes in Russian military thought and operational realities, including hybrid and conventional warfare. He has lectured globally and advised governments and defense institutions on strategic communications, influence, and psychological operations.
