RSI hosts a panel to discuss several strategic questions that the U.S. faces today, including: "What is the Balance of Assurance for NATO Members and Deterrence for Russia?" and "What are we trying to deter (with respect to Russia)?" Panelists include Alina Polyakova, Hal Brands, and Brad Roberts.

Alina Polyakova

Alina Polyakova

Title: President and CEO Affiliation: Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA); Adjunct Professor, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)

Dr. Alina Polyakova is President and CEO of the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) as well as an adjunct professor of European studies at the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Dr. Polyakova is a recognized expert on transatlantic relations, European security, Russian foreign policy, digital authoritarianism, and populism in democracies. She is the author of The Dark Side of European Integration, which examines the rise of far-right political movements in Europe, as well as dozens of major reports and articles in outlets such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, and The Atlantic.

Hal Brands

Title: Henry A. Kissinger Distinguished Professor of Global Affairs Affiliation: Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)

Hal Brands is the Henry A. Kissinger Distinguished Professor of Global Affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. He is also a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion.

Hal served as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Strategic Planning from 2015 to 2016. He has also served as lead writer for the Commission on the National Defense Strategy for the United States and consulted with a range of government offices and agencies in the intelligence and national security communities.

Brad Roberts

Brad Roberts

Title: Director Affiliation: Center for Global Security Research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Dr. Brad Roberts has served as director of the Center for Global Security Research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 2015. From 2009 to 2013, he was deputy assistant secretary of defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy. In this role, he served as policy director of the Obama administration’s Nuclear Posture Review and Ballistic Missile Defense Review and led their implementation.

Dr. Roberts authored the book The Case for US Nuclear Weapons in the 21st Century, which won the Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Title in 2016.
