Details

RSI will be joined by Richard Connolly, Janis Kluge (SWP, Berlin), and Maria Shagina (IISS, London) to discuss the requirements and prospects for the Russian defense industry as an outcome of Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.

Richard Connolly

Title: Director Affiliation: Eastern Advisory Group; Associate Fellow, Royal United Services Institute (RUSI)

Dr. Richard Connolly is the director of the consultancy Eastern Advisory Group and an associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London. He was previously director of the Centre for Russian, European and Eurasian Studies (CREES) at the University of Birmingham and an associate fellow on the Russia and Eurasia Program at Chatham House.

His most recent books are Russia’s Response to Sanctions, published by Cambridge University Press in 2018, and The Very Short Introduction to the Russian Economy, published by Oxford University Press in 2020.

Janis Kluge

Title: Senior Associate Affiliation: German Institute for International Affairs (SWP), Berlin

Dr. Janis Kluge is a Senior Associate at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin, Germany, where he advises the German government and the Bundestag on foreign policy matters. His research focuses on Russia’s economic development, domestic policy, and sanctions.

Dr. Kluge is a frequent commentator on international media, including Bloomberg, CNN, The Economist, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He is also a partner in the RUSECOPOL research project led by the Norwegian Institute of Defence Studies and a coordinator of the EU-Russia expert network.

Maria Shagina

Title: Research Fellow for Economic Sanctions, Standards and Strategy Affiliation: International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS)

Maria Shagina is a Research Fellow for Economic Sanctions, Standards, and Strategy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). She has held numerous prestigious fellowships, including from the Swiss Government, Swiss National Science Foundation, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Open Society Institute, and DAAD.

Maria has written extensively on Western sanctions against Russia, energy security in Eurasia, and Russia's political economy and foreign policy. Her research has been cited in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Financial Times, BBC, CNN, Bloomberg, Foreign Policy, and The Guardian. Maria holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Lucerne (Switzerland).
