Abstract

Dr. Dmitry Adamsky presented the third in a three-part series of workshops examining the establishment of the new Main Military Political Directorate (MMPD).

This session provided a reality check on the MMPD's current operations and explored the way ahead for its development. Dr. Adamsky was joined by Olga Oliker, Michael Kofman, and Joe Cheravitch as discussants, who provided analysis and critiques of the ongoing research.

Dr. Dmitry Adamsky

Dmitry Adamsky

Title: Professor Affiliation: School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy, IDC Herzliya University

Dr. Dmitry (Dima) Adamsky specializes in international security, cultural approaches to IR, and American, Russian, and Israeli national security policies. He is the author of several award-winning books, including Russian Nuclear Orthodoxy: Religion, Politics and Strategy (Stanford UP), which won the 2020 ISA best book award in the category of Religion and IR.

Olga Oliker

Olga Oliker

Title: Program Director for Europe and Central Asia Affiliation: International Crisis Group

Olga Oliker specializes in the foreign and security policies of Russia, Ukraine, and Central Asia, as well as nuclear weapon strategy and arms control. She is a member of the Deep Cuts Commission and an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins SAIS. She holds a PhD in political science from MIT.

Michael Kofman

Title: Senior Research Scientist Affiliation: CNA

Michael Kofman focuses on Russian armed forces, military thought, capabilities, and strategy. He is a Senior Editor at War on the Rocks and runs a blog on Russian armed forces at Russian Military Analysis. He holds an MA in International Security from Georgetown University.

Joseph Cheravitch

Title: Doctoral Student Affiliation: King’s College London

Joe Cheravitch is a doctoral student at King’s College London. He has worked as a defense analyst and served in the U.S. Army from 2008 to 2012. He is a graduate of the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.
