RSI hosted a discussion with Roy Allison, Anna Borshchevskaya, Hanna Notte, and Paul Stronski on Russia's broad strategic interests in the Middle East.
The event explored Russia's actions in the Black Sea, Eastern Mediterranean, and Syria, and their implications for Russia's long-term objectives in the Middle East.
Format
Each panelist presented for 5-7 minutes followed by guided discussion and 30 minutes of Q&A.

Biographies
Roy Allison
Title: Professor of Russian and Eurasian International Relations Affiliation: University of Oxford; Director, Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies, St. Antony’s College
Roy Allison specializes in Russian foreign and security policies and post-Soviet Eurasian states. He is the author of Russia, the West and Military Intervention (2013) and has given evidence to the UK House of Commons Foreign and Defence Committees. He holds extensive experience in academia and policy advising.
Anna Borshchevskaya
Title: Senior Fellow Affiliation: The Washington Institute; Fellow, European Foundation for Democracy
Anna Borshchevskaya focuses on Russia's policy toward the Middle East. She is the author of Putin's War in Syria: Russian Foreign Policy and the Price of America's Absence (2021) and has published widely in outlets such as Foreign Affairs and The Hill. She holds an MA from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate from George Mason University.
Hanna Notte
Title: Senior Research Associate Affiliation: Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation
Dr. Hanna Notte specializes in Russian foreign policy, arms control, and security issues in the Middle East. She has worked extensively on policy-relevant research projects and has published numerous articles in academic journals and media outlets.
Paul Stronski
Title: Senior Fellow Affiliation: Russia and Eurasia Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
Paul Stronski focuses on Russia's relationships with Central Asia and the South Caucasus. He is the author of Tashkent: Forging a Soviet City, 1930-1966 (2010) and has served as a senior analyst for Russian domestic politics at the U.S. State Department. He holds extensive experience in academia and government service.
