When Aleksandr Lukashenko so dramatically mishandled the recent elections, he may have doomed his regime but he also created a headache for Moscow. The Kremlin has been caught flat-footed by the new revolution, which has highlighted not just some of the limitations of Russian power, but also divisions within the leadership. This presentation examined how Moscow will respond in the immediate term, and how the crisis might affect wider Russian calculations about its interests and capacities to project power.

Dr. Mark Galeotti is a specialist in Russian security and international politics. He read history at Robinson College Cambridge and took his doctorate in government at the LSE. He has been Head of History at Keele University, a Senior Research Fellow with the Foreign Office, Professor of Global Affairs at New York University, and a visiting professor at Rutgers-Newark, Charles University (Prague), the European University Institute (Florence) and MGIMO (Moscow). He is a prolific author, and his most recent books include ''A Short History of Russia'' (2020), ''We Need To Talk About Putin'' (2019), ''Russian Political War'' (2019), and ''The Vory: Russia's Super Mafia'' (2018).
